Program note:

The piece was inspired by the story ‘Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius’ by argentinean writer Jorge Luis Borges.

Borges describes ‘Tlön’, an imaginary world, in a quite complex menner. Its culture, its architecture, its inhabitants are described in an almost ‘scientific’, very pointillist way. Establishing hierarchies between different components that shape a complex world within an apparently chaos.

I have taken some concepts the writer describes in such a unique manner and attempted an adaptation into my music intending to create an apparent chaos hiding defined rules. Therefore, the two performers to create their own language by employing those rules. This language is based on the exploration of sound and timbre possibilities of different noises articulated from the cello. The computer employs real-time sampling as well as processing direct signal incoming from the cello. By exploring those possibilities, a dialogue is stalished based on improvisational rules between both partners. Though, certain hierarchies are established, to give unity to the overall music.

Regarding graphic representation I have thought of the imaginary world aspects of the writer's language in order to write down an open-type music score which would represent the different ‘imaginary’ interpretation, resulting in a music piece radically changing from one performance to another.
